Koolanooka iron ore mine is located 60km south-east of Geraldton and 20km east of Morawa in Western Australia. The Koolanooka deposit was first discovered in 1961 and mining at the site was carried out between 1964 and 1974 by Western Mining through a Geraldton Operations Joint Venture (GOJV).
Koolanooka Mine Morawa has a significant mining history being the original site in which the first iron ore was mined and exported from Australia. An iron ore mine was opened in the area in 1965 along with the associated railway spur line, powerhouse, port facilities at Geraldton and housing for workers in Morawa. The original 1966 Koolanooka iron mine was the first iron ore exporting mine in Western Australia. In 2006 iron ore mining was re-commencing at the location.
